Opportunistic Data Aggregation in Delay Tolerant Networks
نویسندگان
چکیده
Delay Tolerant Networks are well suited for longterm statistical data collection, where the installation of infrastructure is impossible or not worthwhile. Those scenarios generally employ wireless links and are often based on limited energy resources such as batteries or battery-buffered solar power. Hence, reducing energy consumption is of foremost importance. In-network data aggregation reduces the amount of data that is to be transferred and therefore lowers the energy consumption. This paper presents an opportunistic, application-independent data aggregation approach for Delay Tolerant Networks. By employing a generic configuration mechanism, applications can specify which bundles to aggregate. Using a standardized data format for measurement values allows intermediate nodes to aggregate a given set of bundles using so-called aggregation functions. The evaluation shows significant reductions in terms of energy consumption in two realistic, exemplary scenarios.

Analysis of Opportunistic Networks based on Realistic Network Traces
Opportunistic network is a type of Delay Tolerant Networks (DTN) where network communication opportunities appear opportunistic, an end-to-end path between source and destination may have never existed, and disconnection and reconnection is common in the network. With numerous emerging opportunistic networking applications, strategies that can enable effective data communication in such challen...
متن کاملA Global One-Way Control Channel for Opportunistic Networks
In this paper, we explore the challenge of limited global knowledge in opportunistic networks. Using a low bandwidth global one-way control channel, e.g., provided through the data side channel of FM radio, we mitigate this limitation. In the case of Epidemic Routing in Delay Tolerant Networks, enhancing the acknowledgment mechanism for delivered messages using this channel improves message del...
متن کاملWhere the Network ends: Infrastructure and Delay Tolerant Networks in a Hybrid Future Internet
Traffic carried by mobile networks doubles per year, resulting in congestion and high cost for network upgrades. With the widespread integration of sensing devices with the Internet—in the so-called “Internet of Things”—infrastructurebased networks are becoming an increasingly expensive way of keeping up with communication needs due to the high volume of sensing data. Delay Tolerant Networks pr...
متن کاملA Delay-Aware Fuzzy-Based System for Selection of IoT Devices in Opportunistic Networks
The opportunistic networks are the variants of Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs). These networks can be useful for routing in places where there are few base stations and connected routes for long distances. In an opportunistic network, when nodes move away or turn off their power to conserve energy, links may be disrupted or shut down periodically. These events result in intermittent connectivity...
متن کاملNovel Metric Conditional Shortest Path Routing in Delay Tolerant in Wireless Mobile Ad-hoc Networks
Routing in delay tolerant networks (DTN) is a challenging problem because at any given time instance, the probability that there is an end-to-end path from a source to a destination. Opportunistic delay tolerant networks are organized by the sporadic connectivity between their nodes and the lack of stable paths from sender to receiver. Future connections are mostly unknown in these networks sen...
